Naish Farms Ltd - Andrew Naish

Naish Farms Ltd are third generation farmers and farm within 2 miles of the oak tree that was supposedly used by Robin Hood as his hideaway. As a child, Andrew Naish used to hide in it as it is hollow, these days it has a fence around for it’s own protection and to preserve it’s heritage.

The soil is very sandy and was laid down when the area was sea many millions of years ago. Conservation projects blend seamlessly with vegetable production and niche crops such as Maris Peer salad potatoes on our undulating sandland. As the land is sandy it is very free draining and that means that we have to pump vast amounts of water onto the land to keep the crops alive and to produce the quality that is expected now. With the water being taken from the river in the winter the environmental impact on river life is zero.

The crops grown include carrots, potatoes, onions, parsnips, leeks, sugar beet, wheat, barley, oil seed rape and beans.

Land is rented off neighbouring farmers to grow these crops and to keep the crop rotations right as suitable land is in short supply and the cost of having the right machinery is too great on small areas.

Naish Farm uses tractors that can be steered and guided down the field by satellites to an accuracy of 2cm meaning that the human error piece of the accuracy is eliminated and also you get less driver fatigue. Using the same satellites they can also go back to exactly the same point in the field when we taking soil nutrient samples, this helps to decide what the previous crop used and therefore how much to apply to the next crop saving waste and pollution.
